The Problem

Why People Become Homeless

While circumstances can vary, the main reason people — even those with jobs — experience homelessness is that they cannot find housing they can afford.

Entire families can become homeless as a result of some unforeseen financial crisis — a medical emergency, a car accident, a death in the family — although most return quickly to independence and stability, especially when referred to other temporary or one-time services such as rent assistance, housing placement and job assistance.
