They will consume your harvest and your food.
They will consume your sons and your daughters.
They will consume your flocks and your herds.
They will consume your vines and your fig trees.
They will destroy with the sword
your fortified cities in which you trust.
Jeremiah 5:17 (HCSB)
Hello all! I’m sorry that I haven’t written in over two months. I have been utterly consumed by the changes taking place at the Mission. I want to invite you to read this verse and to consider the question, “What is consuming me?” I have had to really face this question over the course of the last few months.
What is it that is consuming you today? We all may think of unhealthy things that may consume us, our thoughts, and our lives. Things like drugs and alcohol, or maybe, fear and worry consume you. What is the “they” in your life today?
Have you ever thought that the good things in our lives can consume us? Work, school, or even family can consume us. When we let these good things consume our time and resources we let something in our life to fall by the wayside.
I have learned that no matter how good the work done at the Mission may be; it can and will consume me causing my family to feel left behind, or at times, forgotten. I must remember what Jeremiah is saying in this verse. What consumes you will destroy you.
We should find balance in our lives and not let the good things keep us from the best things, and not let ourselves be consumed. However, we should look to be consumed by God. The writer of Hebrews simply states in Hebrews 12:29, “for our God is a consuming fire.” If we are consumed by God “self” will be destroyed refining us in His glory. Let’s aim to be consumed by Jesus!
What is consuming you today?
What is the “they” in your life?
What area(s) of our life need balance?
How can we let ourselves be consumed more by God?
